If you thought Millennials had high demands for workplace technology leniency, then you’ve got another think coming. Generation Z, or those who are currently college-aged or in their teens, have mobile ingrained in their sense of being. They are keen proponents of the bring your own device (BYOD) movement.
Members of Generation Z—who will be swiftly entering the workforce within the next few years—are attached to their smartphones, performing nearly every possible day-to-day function with their device whether it’s ordering a pizza or booking their next vacation.
In fact, a recent infographic created by Fluent shows just how much Generation Z members use their mobile devices. According to the data, Gen Z spends anywhere from five to 11 hours or more on their phones each day.
So what does this mean for businesses? With the next working generation attached to their phones, businesses must reevaluate their mobile strategy to meet the needs of the current and forthcoming generation.
The fact is, future Generation Z workers are going to expect to be able to use their own mobile devices in the workplace for communication purposes. They don’t want to give up their devices for a legacy communication system that doesn’t have a great user interface or offer integration with apps they already use.
According to a survey of 4,300 U.S. consumers conducted by Gartner, approximately 40 percent of U.S. consumers who work for large enterprises said they use their personal smartphone, desktop or laptop daily for some form of work purposes.
"The lines between work and play are becoming more and more blurred as employees choose to 'use their own device' for work purposes whether sanctioned by an employer or not," said Amanda Sabia, principal research analyst at Gartner. "Devices that were once bought purely for personal use are increasingly being used for work and technology vendors and service providers need to respond to this."
Whether you have a BYOD policy in place or not your employees are going to use their personal devices at work. That’s why you need a sophisticated communication system that allows employees to use their mobile devices wherever and whenever they want. Luckily, there’s a way in which you satisfy Generation Z’s hunger for mobile, Star2Star’s Scalable Cloud Communication Solution.
Star2Star can turn both iOS and Android devices into fully featured softphones that use an employee’s designated work extension. This extension will show up on Caller ID when the user dials out, enabling employees to use their personal device without having to give out their personal number.
Additionally, phones using Mobile Softphone (iOS) and Mobile Softphone (Android) can place and receive calls using any broadband Internet connection, including public Wi-Fi hotspots, without using any plan minutes. If no Internet connection is available, calls can be placed over a 3G/4G connection.
Star2Star also gives employees the types of innovation features that will help them work more effectively and efficiently. For example, users can access their voicemail from mobile devices, so no important message is ever missed. In addition, users will show up on Receptionist Console, making it easy for managers and co-workers to know if they are currently reachable.
If you want to attract and keep top talent within your organization, then you have to outfit employees with the most sophisticated communications technology. By allowing employees to use their own devices in which they feel comfortable will not only keep them happy, but it will also keep them productive.
