Amazon has been making moves within the Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) market. In the midst of tumultuous industry changes, M&As, and existing powerhouses in this space, we can only speculate as to what the online commerce and cloud services company is developing.

Testing The Waters

Amazon’s forays into UCaaS market waters include several business productivity and collaboration products: Workspace (a virtual desktop app), WorkDocs (for document collaboration and management), WorkMail (for email), Quicksight (business analytics), Connect (cloud-based contact center), and most recently Chime, their take on web conferencing. Combine these tools with the power of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and you start to see a potential new provider of cloud-based communications services and infrastructure for businesses.

Sights On The Modern Enterprise

Tackling the modern enterprise may be exactly what the digital giant is trying to do, a different direction for the widely recognized consumer-facing brand. To help leverage their efforts with UCaaS offerings, they have employed the help of a few key players including Vonage and Level 3 Communications; both are offering Chime as part of their portfolios. In addition, Amazon has made low-cost options an integral part of their business model. With free basic versions and minimal fees for more feature-rich versions, it would seem they are encouraging user adoption first and foremost.

There have also been whispers of the potential acquisition of Slack, the business chat platform known for its exponential growth, which would add considerable flexibility to their business communications apps. The brand recognition for Amazon and Slack could also provide benefits to both companies; it remains to be seen if another industry-shifting merger will occur.

The Amazon Of The Future

As their UCaaS offerings and cloud-based services continue to expand, we may be on the verge of a new era of Amazon. However, with so many new products being released, Amazon users may be in a lurch without the stability of a well-established provider and adequate customer support.
